A woman should consult her health care provider first to make sure that she has no contra-indications to using the pills. Also, ECPs must be taken within 72 or 120 hours of unprotected sex. ECPs prevent most pregnancies but they are not 100% effective. The treatment fails in approximately 1-3% of women using ECPs correctly. Emergency contraceptive pills must be taken within 72 or 120 hours of unprotected intercourse and intra-uterine device must be inserted within 5 days.
