Clinical studies show that taking folic acid during pregnancy helps the development of the baby's central nervous system and reduces the chance of spinal cord defects. It is recommended that women who are planning a pregnancy should take folic acid supplement (400 micrograms per day), starting before conception and continuing during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
Folic acid is also needed to produce red blood cells, and people who have thalassaemia may need extra folic acid.
Folic acid can be taken on its own or in multivitamin products. Please ask our medical staff for more information on folic acid supplement.
