Sex Q&A

Emergency Contraception

I have some questions about post-intercourse pills. Because of the leakage of condom, my gf take the pills within 12 hrs after the accident. She has already had menstruation but the amount of blood was lesser than normal. Will we have baby in this case?

Emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) should be prescribed by a health care provider. A woman should consult her health care provider first to make sure that she has no contra-indications to using the pills. Also, ECPs must be taken within 72 or 120 hours of unprotected sex. ECPs prevent most pregnancies but they are not 100% effective. The treatment fails in approximately 1-3% of women using ECPs correctly. If your girlfriend had not consulted a healthcare professional before, we would advise her to see one as soon as possible to make sure that if she has taken the correct dosage and that if any follow-up is necessary. The Family Planning Association of Hong Kong also offers consultation service for emergency contraception.

Can I buy the emergency contraceptive pills in drugstores or I have to go to the hospital? (If possible, please recommend places where I can get ECPs) I made love with my girlfriend this morning. Thanks!

Emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) should be prescribed by a health care provider and should not be purchased over-the-counter at drugstores without authorized prescription. Besides, a woman should consult her doctor first to make sure she has no contraindications to using the pills. Emergency contraceptive pills must be taken within 72 or 120 hours of unprotected intercourse and intra-uterine device must be inserted within 5 days. Our Birth Control Clinics (for female who are married or aged over 26) or Youth Health Care Centres (for unmarried people under the age of 26) can provide emergency contraception service.
