Contraceptive implant is a small plastic rod loaded with progestogen hormone that is inserted under the skin of the inner side of your non-dominant upper arm. Hormone will be slowly released to inhibit ovulation and thicken cervical mucus making it difficult for sperms to enter the uterus. It cannot prevent sexually transmissible infections (STI), e.g. HIV, so you still need to use condoms to prevent STI when you have sexual contact every time.
How long is the contraceptive implant effective for contraception?
The contraceptive implant provides contraception for three years and must be removed and replaced then.
What are the benefits of the contraceptive implant?
Contraceptive implant is a long-acting and highly effective contraceptive. Less than 1 out of 100 women gets pregnant in one year of use. It can provide contraception for up to 3 years, there is no need to change it or take medicine frequently. It will not affect your sexual life or daily activities, which is convenient and time-saving. In addition, the procedure of insertion, removal or replacement of the contraceptive implant is quick and simple. If you want to be pregnant or no longer want to use it, you can seek help from your doctor to remove it earlier, fertility returns quickly after removal. Women can use it while breastfeeding.
When can the contraceptive implant be inserted?
The contraceptive implant can be inserted at any time during your menstrual cycle as long as it is reasonably certain that you are not pregnant.
Will the contraceptive implant affect menstruation?
Most women may have irregular and unpredictable menses, some women may have frequent and/or prolonged menses, some women may stop having menses. This is an expected effect of the hormone, and you don’t need to worry.
What are the common side effects of the contraceptive implant?
Women may have headache, vaginitis, acne, breast pain, weight gain etc. in the early stage of using the contraceptive implant and will gradually subside. In addition, bruising, itchiness and pain at the insertion site is common and may last for 1-2 weeks, please don’t rub the skin over the contraceptive implant. A small scar may remain after the insertion and removal of the implant.
