“Cervical Smear Taker Course 2017” CNE Program collaborated by FPAHK and HKU begins enrolment

The Family Planning Association of Hong Kong (FPAHK) and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of The University of Hong Kong jointly offer a short part-time Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Program to train professional cervical smear takers in September this year.

In Hong Kong, the general public’s awareness of cervical cancer, the 8th commonest cancer among women, and its prevention has been increasing, since the territory-wide Cervical Screening Programme was introduced in 2004 by the Government. By 2016, 512,629 women had registered in the Cervical Screening Information System under the Programme. The awareness has further enhanced since the HPV vaccine’s availability in 2007.

This part-time program comprises lectures and optional practicum delivered by doctors, nurses and allied health professionals specialized in the field. It is recommended and endorsed by the Hong Kong Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (HKSCCP)for enrolled nurses, registered nurses and midwives registered with the Nursing Council of Hong Kong.

On completion of the program, the learners will be able to: take a cervical smear competently and provide sufficient data for pathologist’s interpretation; recognize abnormal changes of the cervix; understand the meaning and management of abnormal cervical smear; explain and provide basic counselling to clients on cervical cytology report; and conduct health education on cervical cancer prevention.
