FPAHK Kwai Fong Youth Health Care Centre officially opens today

The Family Planning Association of Hong Kong (FPAHK) officially opened the Kwai Fong Youth Health Care Centre today, a new service location dedicated exclusively to youths. Ms Lina Yan, MH, JP, Chairman of FPAHK, presided at the opening ceremony with Dr Constance Chan, JP, Director of Health, as the officiating guest.

The youth health care service, previously housed in FPAHK’s integrated clinic in Tsuen Wan, has been detached and relocated to the convenient and well facilitated Metroplaza as Kwai Fong Youth Health Care Centre. It aims to provide an exclusive and more accessible service place for young people in the New Territories, Tsuen Wan, Kwai Chung and South Kowloon, while allowing Tsuen Wan Clinic enough space to accommodate more adult clients.

In her welcoming address, Ms Yan pointed out that youth was a stage when a person underwent tremendous physical and psychological changes. With today’s information flooding in the mass media, challenges brought about by rapid changes in social values and peer influence, young people would easily find themselves confused and frustrated.  Education, guidance and support would be key and instrumental to their future wellbeing. She said FPAHK was glad to see more parents concerned with their children's physical development and sexuality health by accompanying them to seek counselling, health checkup and vaccination services. She also encouraged young people to go to their parents and teachers for support when in doubts and seek professional help promptly if needed.

Dr Cheung Kai-bun, Vice-Chairman and Chairman of the Health Services Subcommittee of FPAHK, expressed gratitude to the Department of Health, Education Bureau, social services organizations, primary and secondary schools and district government and community organizations for their partnership and support in FPAHK’s work in promoting sexuality education and advocating youth sexual health. He pleaded for their continuous partnership and concerted efforts in promoting the physical and psychological development of youth in Hong Kong.

As early as in 1978, FPAHK launched its youth sexuality education and counselling services. In 1986, FPAHK established the first YHCC with integrated clinical and counselling services, the first of its kind in Hong Kong to offer primary and preventive care in sexual and reproductive health to unmarried youths aged below 26. FPAHK is currently running three YHCCs, located respectively in Wan Chai in Hong Kong, Mongkok in Kowloon and this newly relocated one in Kwai Fong in Kwai Chung District. Their services include contraceptive advice, emergency contraception, reproductive health checkup, human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, termination of pregnancy counselling and referral, and sexuality counselling, etc. A total attendance of over 28,000 was recorded in 2014.
