Male Condom

The condom is a rubber sheath worn over the erected penis to prevent sperms from entering the woman's uterus. It has to be worn correctly during every act of sexual intercourse. If used correctly during every act of sexual intercourse, the failure rate is 2% per year. If it is used incorrectly and inconsistently, the failure rate can increase to 18% per year. It is generally free of side effects and can provide protection for both partners against sexually transmissible infections (STI), including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). People sensitive to rubber should not use condom.

Directions for use:

  1. Check the package to ensure it has not expired and is intact.
  2. Gently push the condom to the left side and carefully tear the package along the right edge. Squeeze the condom out gently, taking care not to damage it with sharp fingernails. Put on the condom before the penis contacts the female genitalia.
  3. Expel air from the teat of the condom by squeezing or twisting it (see Diagram 1).
  4. Position the condom on the head of an erect penis, leaving a ¼ inch pouch at the tip for semen collection (see Diagram 2).
  5. Gently squeeze the air out of the pouch with one hand and use the other hand to roll the condom all the way down to the base of the penis.
  6. Once the condom is properly fitted, release the hold on the pouch.
  7. After ejaculation, promptly remove the condom along with the penis by gripping the base. This helps prevent leakage of seminal fluid into the vagina or the condom slipping inside.
  8. Wrap the used condom and dispose of it in a trash bin.
  9. A new condom must be used for each act of intercourse.
