Join video contest to promote sexual harassment prevention among ethnic minorities and win an iPad

Do you understand what “sexual harassment” means? Have you or your friends encountered sexual harassment? What can you do in case of it? Is there any chance that you have sexually harassed someone unintentionally? If it happens to someone else, how can we respond as bystanders?

Sexual harassment is, in actuality, prevalent on and outside campus. According to “Understanding Sexual Harassment Pamphlet” published by the Family Planning Association of Hong Kong (FPAHK), common forms of sexual harassment include: Unwelcome physical contact of body parts, such as standing close or brushing up against another person, patting on the shoulder or hand; Verbal harassment, such as turning discussion into sexual topics, sexual jokes, prying into other’s sexual privacy and sexually suggestive or offensive comments or innuendos; Non-verbal harassment, such as leering, whistling or displaying pornography; Quid pro quo: bribery for sexual favours or pressure or threats for sexual activities, etc. Beyond the analogue world, “cyber sexual harassment” is also a growing concern. FPAHK Education Division’s Sexuality Education Newsletter “0-18+” has offered an in-depth coverage of this topic in one issue in 2019.

In reality, many youths may not understand “sexual harassment” very well, or be aware how to tackle it and seek help in case of it. With limited access to relevant information and resources due to their different language and cultural backgrounds, ethnic minorities in Hong Kong face even greater challenges.

In view of this, FPAHK encourages students from secondary school and tertiary institutions across the territory to join the “Breaking Racial Barriers: Educational Programme on Preventing Sexual Harassment Video Contest for Young People 2020/21”. Each participant makes a short video of 5 minutes or less in duration to disseminate messages on sexual harassment prevention to ethnic minorities, with the aim to help them understand the definition of sexual harassment, how to deal with it and seek help, avoid becoming a sexual harasser and equip them with the ability to handle it. This contest makes a good opportunity for students not only to enhance their own knowledge about sexual harassment and ability to deal with it, but also to put their talents in video making and editing to good use, contributing their efforts in promoting an equal and inclusive society.

Members of the public will be allowed to view selected entries on the FPAHK Education Facebook Page (www.facebook.com/FPAHK.Education) and “like” their favourite entry to vote for the Online Popularity Award.

The contest is sponsored by Equal Opportunities Commission’s “Community Participation Funding Programme on Equal Opportunities”. Prizes are as follows:

  • Winner - an iPad 32GB
  • 1st runner up, 2nd runner up and Online Popularity Award winner (one) - Muji gift vouchers of $1,000, $800 and $500 respectively

The winning videos shall be used by FPAHK for promotion, support and exhibition.

The deadline is 31 May 2021. Details on the contest and the method of submission: https://forms.gle/9v5graMZJAycYgFVA. For enquiries, please call 2919-7793.
