Pre-pregnancy Health Service (Government-funded)

FPAHK launches a new Pre-pregnancy Health Service subvented by the Government. This service is dedicated to helping women prepare for pregnancy, emphasising early planning in alignment with the Government’s policy to promote fertility. The new Pre-pregnancy Health Service is exclusively for women and includes comprehensive prepregnancy assessment, counselling, examinations and tests, followed by further investigations and management based on their individual health needs. Please read the following service procedure. 

Male partners may choose to access other FPAHK services if they wish to have a comprehensive pre-pregnancy check-up. Couples having difficulties conceiving after one year of regular unprotected sexual intercourse are encouraged to schedule an appointment for FPAHK’s Subfertility Service for fertility assessment and treatment. Please contact our staff for details.

Pre-pregnancy Health Service is available at five FPAHK Clinics (Wan Chai, Ma Tau Chung, Wong Tai Sin, Tsuen Wan and Yuen Long). Female clients can make appointment or inquire through the following channels:

Initial Consultation

Please note: female clients can refer to below service content and service fees; additional charges will apply for services beyond the core offerings at the initial consultations (please refer to the service fees highlighted in blue).

Service Content: 
  • Pre-pregnancy assessment and counselling by a nurse 1
  • Physical and pelvic examinations by a doctor 2
  • Complete blood count (CBC)
  • Blood test for syphilis and HIV antibody (treponemal antibody by EIA and HIV Ag/Ab combo)

1 Pre-pregnancy assessment and counselling by a nurse

  • Assessment (including measurement of blood pressure, body weight and height, and body mass index; understanding of personal and family history including allergy history, history-based risk assessments for hereditary diseases, sexually transmissible infections (STIs), and cervical screening history 3; assessment of the risk for rubella 4, hepatitis B 5 and STIs 6)
  • Counselling on preconception healthy lifestyle tips, including diet, exercise, smoking cessation, and alcohol avoidance

2 Physical and pelvic examinations by a doctor

  • Including auscultation of heart and lungs, examination of thyroid, abdomen, pelvis, breasts and external genitalia

3 If female clients have never had cervical screening or the test is due → undergo Co-test (hr-HPV DNA test + cervical cytology) (HK$870) / cervical cytology (liquid-based cytology) (HK$350)

4 If female clients are uncertain of their rubella status → undergo rubella antibody test (HK$200)

5 If female clients’ sexual partner or family members are hepatitis B carriers → undergo hepatitis B surface antigen and surface antibody test (HK$360)

6 If female clients are at risk for STIs → cervical swab for chlamydia trachomatis and neisseria gonorrhoeae DNA and high vaginal swab culture for bacterial vaginosis, trichomonas & monilia (HK$690)

Second Consultation

Normal Report

Abnormal Report (We will call you in advance and request your partner to attend our clinic if necessary)

Nurse explains lab report (no additional fee is required)

Doctor explains lab report (HK$220)

  • If female clients’ CBC result shows low mean corpuscular volume (MCV) → male partner can undergo CBC (HK$100)
  • If female clients’ CBC result shows low MCV and low haemoglobin level → undergo iron profile test (HK$605)
  • If the results of female clients’ STIs / hepatitis B surface antigen test / cervical screening require follow-up → FPAHK will arrange treatment / referral
  • If female clients who are non-immune to rubella → recommended to receive 1 dose of measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine (HK$260 - including 1 dose of vaccine and nurse injection fee)
  • If female clients who are non-hepatitis B carrier and non-immune to hepatitis B → recommended to receive 3 doses of hepatitis B vaccine, please complete the course of vaccination within 6 months as instructed by healthcare staff (HK$1,110 - including 3 doses of vaccines and nurse injection fee)

Female clients who are diagnosed with iron deficiency anaemia → doctor explains lab report & prescribes iron supplement (HK$220 plus HK$90 per box of 30 iron tablets) 

 

  • If male clients’ CBC result is normal → nurse explains lab report (no additional fee is required)

  • If male clients’ CBC result shows low MCV → doctor explains lab report (HK$220) → FPAHK will refer the client for thalassemia (α & β gene) and anaemia tests (HK$2,420) and refer to follow-up
