Hong Kong is often regarded as a materialistic society with a culture of consumerism, especially during festive seasons. To promote healthy dating without excessive consumption, FPAHK’s youth volunteer team Famplus2 organized a “Love and Dating Contest” on 13th December 2015. Couples aged 16 to 30 years old were invited to plan for a meaningful date within a budget of HK$131.2. The numbers “1312” in the date and the budget sound like “forever” in Cantonese, and denote the ideal of a lasting relationship. The youth volunteers accompanied the couples during the date, recording the activities and costs incurred. A mystery task was assigned to the participants during the journey to challenge their problem solving skills.

Six couples were selected and completed the dating activities on 13th December. Afterwards the couples gathered for the award presentation ceremony and described their encounters and reflections. Most of them treasured this opportunity to spend time together meaningfully. They found the mystery tasks interesting and their mutual understanding was enhanced. Volunteers also felt that the experience was memorable, and agreed that communication is far more important in a relationship than expensive dating activities.

The couple who spent the exact amount of $131.2 were rewarded by a DIY workshop for a handmade craft. All the six dating plans were shared in Famplus2’s Facebook page, and the couple who receives the greatest number of “likes” from the public will receive another gift as a token of appreciation.
