Pre-teens are when youngsters start to look beyond themselves and their family circles, exploring options and forming their own opinions. Parents can and should be part of this process as their offspring learn to see the world differently. The Association recently published “The Children’s Book of Growing Up Series” for parents to start the conversation with their primary school children about self-image, interpersonal relationships and sexuality.

“The Children’s book of Growing Up: What’s Going on…. Down There?” teaches young readers about the privacy of the body, how to cope with anxieties and develop positive attitude towards sexuality and interpersonal relationships.

“The Children’s Book of Growing Up: Why Pick on Me?” is about bullying, to help young readers learn how to get along with their peers and cultivate healthy self-image and relationships.

“The Children’s Book of Growing Up: Is This Love?” explores friendship and attraction, encouraging young readers to reflect on their feelings and build confidence in social connections.

These storybooks are interactive. What happens next in the story depends on the choices that the reader makes. Questions are posed for the reader to ponder as he/she steps into the shoes of the story characters.

The three attractively illustrated publications were launched at the annual Hong Kong Book Fair over the last three years. They are available for sale in the Association’s Activity & Resource Centre (ARC), the Teen Bean Mobile Classroom, and can be purchased online from the FPAHK sexuality education website (www.famplan.org.hk/sexedu).
