FPAHK to offer Artificial Insemination by Husband Service

In March this year, The Family Planning Association of Hong Kong (FPAHK) will introduce Artificial Insemination by Husband (AIH) to treat couples with subfertility due to mild male factors or unexplained causes.

FPAHK’s Subfertility Service provides couples who have difficulty in childbearing with assessment, investigation, treatment and referral. Suitable couples will be offered AIH treatment in the Association’s Sexual and Reproductive Health Centre in Wanchai. Medical staff will explain to the couple about the treatment procedures, pregnancy rate and possible complications. The treatment involves stimulation of ovulation by oral drug, followed by insemination where the husband’s washed semen is placed into the uterus. Up to four cycles of AIH treatment will be offered to each couple, and $1,200 will be charged for each cycle.

According to clinical literature, the pregnancy rate for each AIH treatment cycle is 8-11%. The procedure is largely safe for both the mother and the baby. Possible complications for the woman includes drug allergy, ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome, an 8-10% risk of multiple pregnancy and associated obstetric complications, pelvic infection and reported association with increased risk of ovarian cancer later in life.

Couples who have been trying to have children but failed to conceive after one year of regular sexual intercourse without contraception are advised to consult FPAHK’s Subfertility Service. Information and e-booking are available on the FPAHK Website www.famplan.org.hk, or through the FPAHK Clinic Service Hotline 2572-2222.
