Application Details

Application Duration: from 4 May 2023, a three-year programme

Please read the following service procedure before making an application.

For application, couples must fulfill the following requirements:
  • Holders of Hong Kong Identity Card;
  • Planning for pregnancy and currently not pregnant;
  • Reached 18 years old or above, and female applicant at childbearing age; and
  • Meeting any of the following eligibility criteria:
    • Two or more miscarriages, or have repeated fetal malformations / disabilities
    • Previous unexplained fetal or neonatal conditions
    • Consanguineous marriage (first and second degree relatives; the couple has a higher chance of having the same defective gene)
    • Strong family history of intellectual disability, miscarriage or malformation
    • Known ethnic groups of high risk of monogenic diseases
    • Other high risk factors of having genetic disorders (e.g. thalassemia)
Only online application is accepted, both male and female applicants must complete and submit the online application form.
The Family Planning Association of Hong Kong (FPAHK) will call1 the applicants within one month for initial assessment and arrangement of the first appointment.
Both male and female applicants are required to visit FPAHK clinics2 in person to verify their eligibility and to receive free pre-genetic test assessment; according to the assessment result, blood tests may be offered. Please bring along the original of Hong Kong identity card upon registration and for verification3.
If blood test is not required after the pre-genetic test assessment, then the couple has completed all the process; If blood samples are collected, genetic test is provided by The Chinese University of Hong Kong — Baylor College of Medicine Joint Centre for Medical Genetics (CUHK).
Test reports will be available after 8-10 weeks and the applicants will be contacted for follow-up.
1) If test results show that the couples are not carriers, then no additional testing is needed. Participants are advised to seek obstetricians’ advice for their future fertility plans.

2) If test results show that the couples are both carriers, further discussion on options and management will be arranged.

3 Both male and female applicants are required to present the original of Hong Kong identity cards upon the first visit. Applicants holding Hong Kong identity cards without a photo are required to present the original of other photo-bearing identity documents.
