Declaration of the 7th Asian Conference on Sexuality Education

Before announcing the Declaration, we wish to express our deepest appreciation to all the participants of the 7th ACSE, including guest speakers, delegates, organizing and programme committee members, co-organizers, staff and volunteers. Without your contributions, this Conference would not have attained its goals.

A multitude of cultural, religious and socioeconomic factors impact the pace of development of sexuality education in Asia. Many countries still lack an established policy for comprehensive sexuality education. Various communities’ needs and rights in sexuality education, particularly those of marginalized youth, females, vulnerable groups and minorities, are not fully recognized nor adequately addressed.

Embracing the theme of “Challenges of Sexuality Education: Inclusion, Relevance, Comprehensiveness”, this Conference gathers current theories and practices of sexuality education targeting diverse groups in this region. It has been an opportunity for open exchange and exploration on the direction that sexuality education may take in these rapidly changing times. We believe that participants have been enriched and inspired to return to our own areas of work with renewed vigour and conviction to develop sexuality education in Asian communities.

We, the participants of the 7th Asian Conference on Sexuality Education, declare that: We share the collective goal of promoting gender equity, sexual and reproductive health and rights in Asia; seeking through government leadership, decision-makers engagement and multi-sectoral cooperation, to advocate sexuality education strategies, implementation and development of evidence-based programmes. While upholding the principle of respect for diverse cultures, we strive to further cooperation within our region, and to enhance the sexual and reproductive health of our fellow Asians.
