Our Scope of Work
| The Family Planning Association strives to promote knowledge on reproductive and sexual health so as to reduce unsafe abortions, to achieve sustainable balance between population and resource distribution and thereby enhance the quality of human life. To cater for the growing demand for health and education, the Association has embarked on several significant new areas of its work to keep pace with time and contribute to the society. |
A Shared Commitment to Women's Health
| The Association has always promoted women's reproductive and sexual health. Following the success of the Workshop on Reproductive and Sexual Health of Hong Kong Women in 1996, an Advocacy Group was set up to make recommendations on the issue. |
Medical Services Providing Comprehensive Care
To provide more comprehensive care to women, the Association's scope of services has expanded continuously. Existing services include birth control, pre-marital package, gynaecological check-up, subfertility and youth health care etc. We are also collaborating with public hospitals to provide Hormone Replacement Therapy for menopausal women.
In April 1998, we introduced a Pre-pregnancy Preparation Service to bridge the service gap between marriage and pregnancy. In addition, the public will benefit from the newly established Mobile Clinic and Menopause Clinic. |
Research and Survey to keep pace with the times
| The Association continues to engage actively in clinical research in collaboration with local universities. We also conducted research projects led by the World Health Organization. Surveys were conducted to get a better picture of the society and its needs. Aside from the two territory-wide studies carried out once every five year, namely, the Survey on Family Planning Knowledge, Attitude & Practice and the Youth Sexuality Study, the Association also conducted a Survey on New Arrival Women in providing reproductive and contraceptive services to these women of reproductive age. |
Expansion of Educational Work
Implementing sexuality education and offering regular education programmes have long been an integral part of the Association's work. The Association has all along been organizing education talks in primary and secondary schools. The Secondary School Sexuality Education Activity Week introduced in 1997 was well received. To meet the increasing demand, sexuality education programmes for post-secondary institutes have been strengthened and similar programmes in kindergartens are being planned.
The Association's Reference Library in Wanchai is the only sexuality education resource centre in the territory open to the public. In April 1999, we launched the first sex education mobile library to better serve the schools and organizations. In addition, we provide training courses for teachers, social workers and parents in order to enhance their knowledge on sexuality education. |
Developing A Wide Range of Resource Materials
| To meet the needs of teachers, sex educators, social workers and parents, the Association strives to develop and produce a variety of sex education resource materials. Besides books, the Association produces resources such as teaching kits, audio and video tapes and among which the sex education dolls "Tak Tak" and "Kar Kar" are well received by the public. To keep up with the rapid development of information technology, we also produce sexuality education CD-ROMs and our own sexuality education web page to provide the public with a wider choice. To promote sexuality education, we will continue to develop new resources, strengthen collaboration with publishers and explore new channels to widen circulation. |
External liaison for Community Integration
| The Association publicizes information on family life education and its services through the press, television, radio broadcast, public transportation, leaflets, newsletters, posters etc. as well as launching territory-wide publicity campaigns. We also promote family planning at the grassroots level. The activities of our six women's clubs have succeeded in increasing awareness on family planning and women's health in the community. |
